PLL FM demodulator performance under Gaussian modulation

چکیده

A wide-spread test of the PLL FM demodulator under Gaussian modulation is simulated using the Monte Carlo method. Unified noise-free and noise performance analyses of the PLL FM demodulator are presented. Substantial reduction of the modulation limit by the input bandpass filter is reported in the region of the input bandwidth of practical interest. Bessel bandpass filters of order greater than two are shown to compare favorably with Butterworth filters in front of the PLL FM demodulator relative to the IM distortion. A lower bound on the loop noise bandwidth is found by minimizing the output click rate for given IM distortion specifications. FM threshold of 4 dB and 7 dB for the rms frequency deviation-to-message bandwidth ratio 0.1 and 1.0, respectively, is reported on the worst-case IM distortion of 45 dB.

Simulations of the Frequency Modulated - Atomic Force Microscope (FM-AFM) Nonlinear Control System

The Frequency Modulated Atomic Force Microscope (FM-AFM) is a powerful tool to perform surface investigation with true atomic resolution. The control system of the FM-AFM must keep constant both the frequency and amplitude of oscillation of the microcantilever during the scanning process of the sample. However, tip and sample interaction forces cause modulations in the microcantilever motion. A...

The Detection of Pcm/fm

Introduction The PCM/FM detection system is shown in Fig. 1. The PCM signal is shaped using a premodulation filter, then frequency modulated and transmitted through a channel with additive gaussian noise. The received signal and noise are shaped by a predetection filter. The PCM waveform is recovered using an FM demodulator such as the discriminator, PLL or FCF, and then passed through a PCM De...

Decision Feedback Postprocessor for Zero-Crossing Digital FM Demodulator

A baseband digital narrow-band FM receiver, called zero-intermediate frequency zero-crossing demodulator (ZIFZCD), has been recently developed. This demodulator may offer low complexity and simple implementation. However, the bit error rate (BER) performance of the ZIFZCD is inferior to that of the limiter-discriminator-integrate-and-dump (LDI) demodulator. In this paper, a simple decision feed...

Analysis of FM demodulator output noise with applications to FM telemetry

We present an analysis for evaluating the probability density function (pdf) of the noise at the output of the frequency demodulator. It is shown that the noise is non-Gaussian and that for low to medium signal-to-noise power ratios, its pdf differs very significantly from the Gaussian pdf commonly assumed in simplified analysis. These results are very important for analyzing the performance of...

Amplitude Response Curves of Frequency-Locked Rotations

This letter studies frequency-locked rotations in a phaselocked loop (PLL) circuit as FM demodulator. A rotation represents a desynchronized steady state in the PLL circuit and is regarded as another type of self-excited oscillations with natural rotation frequencies. The rotation frequency can be locked at driving frequencies of modulation signals. This letter shows response curves for harmoni...
